Expression of interest
As part of the Transporting Arts Pilot Program, the City of Melbourne is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from artists (individuals, groups or collaborations) to provide creative artwork for the tram shelter located at Stop 7 - Queen Victoria Market
In partnership with Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and Transport Operator, Yarra Trams, this initiative aims to create a welcoming environment for commuters and visitors.
The selected artist/s will receive $3,000 (AUD) as payment. The artist will be acknowledged at the stop as part of the artwork installation.
About the Transporting Arts Pilot Program
The Department of Transport and Planning’s Transporting Arts Pilot Program is revitalising transport hubs across Victoria in partnership with V/Line, MetroTrains, Yarra Trams and local councils.
The Program aims to enliven the community and passenger experience at tram stops and train stations across Victoria with public art installations by local artists.
To date, the program has transformed eight sites including tram stops at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne Museum, Carlton and Northcote, and train stations in Wyndham Vale, Pascoe Vale, Wallan and Ballan. Information for artists
Artists may submit one artwork (new or existing).
There is no specific size or resolution needed for submissions; however, the artwork will need to be scalable for installation.
If your artwork is selected, you will ultimately need to submit as a high resolution PDF or Illustrator file. Refer to this 'Preparing artwork for tram shelters' document for technical detail.
The artwork must be suitable for display in a public space and not likely to cause offense.
If you are using First Peoples stories or cultural material that is not your own, please provide evidence of community consultation and cultural permissions in the Support Material section of your application
Artist fee
The artist of the selected artwork will receive $3,000 (AUD) as payment.
Installation
The selected artwork will be printed on vinyl and attached to the shelter panels by an approved graphics supplier/ contractor. The artwork may need to be cropped to allow for successful installation.
Artist acknowledgement
The artist will be acknowledged at the stop as part of the artwork installation. The Department of Transport and Planning, Yarra Trams and City of Melbourne will acknowledge the artist in relevant marketing and promotional material specific to this project.
Artist agreement
Upon selection, the Department of Transport and Planning will enter into an agreement with the successful artist and process payment.
Artwork copyright
Artwork copyright will remain with the artist at all times. Department of Transport and Planning, Yarra Trams and City of Melbourne will retain the right to use images and videos of the installation in future promotions of the Transporting Arts Program or other community activity promotion. Every effort will be made to acknowledge the artist when images of the work are used.
Artwork maintenance
The artwork will be maintained by Yarra Trams for a minimum of 12 months following installation.
Eligibility
Artists (individuals, groups or collaborations) who apply must:
- Currently live, work, or have a connection to Victoria
- Be able to supply the final artwork files in this EOI by the closing date, end of day, Sunday 20 April 2025
- Submit their own work or have permission from all participants to include their work in their submission
- Be willing to be filmed and photographed at the site once completed
- Students may apply however the proposed activity must not be associated with the completion of a course of study
- Have a valid ABN for payment purposes
First Peoples, d/deaf or disabled and multicultural communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Selection criteria and panel assessment
Submissions will be assessed by a committee of representatives from the Department of Transport and Planning, the City of Melbourne and Yarra Trams, based on the following criteria:
- Strength of creative vision and design
- Technical and logistical feasibility
- Originality of the design
The Department of Transport and Planning requires that the artwork must not:
- Be offensive to the general public
- Condone or provoke anti-social behaviour
- Promote or relate to alcohol or gambling
- Use sexualised images or gender objectification
- Portray images or events that may cause distress to children
- Be used to promote a political party, parties or a political cause
- Use offensive language
- Demean any person or group on the basis of ethnicity, nationality, race, gender, age, sexual preference, religion or mental or physical disability or
- Disparage or diminish the reputation of public transport or the public transport system in Victoria
- Include any commercial content
- Resemble, be capable of confusion with, or obstruct directional or informational signs or otherwise compromise wayfinding in any way
- Include logos, overt branding or QR codes
- Appear to look like graffiti
Term
Artwork will be installed and maintained/repaired if damaged for a minimum of 12 months. Following this period, and at the discretion of the Department of Transport and Planning, the artwork will remain installed depending on its condition and community feedback.
The Department of Transport and Planning retains the right to remove the artwork if the public transport asset it is installed on has been decommissioned or relocated. Department of Transport and Planning also has the right to relocate the artwork if a suitable alternate site has been identified.
